Macintosh Specific Settings

Reconfiguring Free PPP 2.6.2

Free PPP is the program that is installed with the Mercury Network CD.

1. Click on the Blue Telephone icon at the top of the screen. Then click on Open FreePPP Setup.

 

2. Make sure the following things are selected:

  • Connect To: Mercury Network
  • From: Home, or Default
  • Using: Generic Modem or your specific modem

Under the General Tab, the following things should be check-marked:

  • Allow applications to open connection
  • Check line state when connected
  • Show alerts during connect and disconnect

 

3. Now click on the Accounts tab near the middle of the window. Mercury Network should be listed. If you have others, click once on them to highlight it, then click the Delete button in the lower-right corner of the screen.

When only Mercury Network is listed, make sure it is highlighted, then click the Edit button on the right side.

 

4. Under the Account tab.

  • Account name: Mercury Network
  • Connect: Directly
  • User name: Your Mercury Network login name typed in the form login_name@tm.net.
  • Password: Your Mercury Network password with no spaces or capital letters.
  • A check-mark next to Reconnect automatically if connection drops is optional.

 

5. Now click the Dialup tab at the top.
Enter your area code and local access number. Leave Dial area code unchecked.

 

6. Now click on the Options tab at the top.
The following things should be entered:

  • Domain name: tm.net
  • Primary DNS: 64.7.161.12
  • Secondary DNS: 64.7.161.13
  • IP address: Assigned by PPP server

After all necessary changes have been made, click OK.

 

7. That will take you back to the FreePPP Setup main window. Click on the Location tab at the top. Then click once on Home, or the location you would like to use, then click the Edit button.

 

8. Location name can be what ever you would like, but Home will most likely be the default name. Leave Location name alone for now. Enter your area code next.
If your area has call waiting, you can disable it while on the Internet by typing a number next to Dial prefix. For example, *70.
Click OK.

 

9. That should take you back to the FreePPP Setup main window. Now click on the Modems tab at the top. Select the modem that you are using, may be called Generic, then click on Edit.

 

10. The following information should be entered:

  • Modem config name: Generic Modem, or you may change it to the exact modem model you have.
  • Connected to: Internal modem if your modem is inside your computer, or External if your modem is outside of the computer.
  • Port speed: 115200 for 56k modems, 57600 for 33.6k modems, 38400 for 28.8k modems, or 19200 for 14.4k modems.
  • Flow Control: CTS & RTS (DTR)
  • Dial type: Tone

The following things should be check-marked:

  • Speaker enabled
  • Hangup on disconnect
  • If you have Macintosh OS version 8.0 or higher, Fast modem initialization.

Under Modem init string settings: Use should have a dot next to it and at&f1&d0 should be entered. If you are having problems staying connected or connecting, you can enter init strings for your modem that will enable and disable connection protocols and limit your connection speeds.

 

The next step is to check the settings of the TCP/IP control Panel.
